From mid GA here. Married, 1 goth daughter, and for Mom's Day, her BF got thrown out of the house so he is staying with us in a camper. We have 22 acres and are off the road where no one can see where we are. We LOVE it. We are about ready for anything and have everything here but common sense So happy to have found others of same mind

Hi all. I'm relatively new here. Currently live in Metairie, Louisiana but preparing to move to northern Arkansas in less than 3 years time. (I wish it could come sooner.) My boyfriend (ozarkflyer) and I go up about twice a year to clear it and get it ready to build on - we're going to build ourselves so wish us luck.
I've got a decent garden going this year but been have quite a time dealing with the pests chomping all my green bean leaves and cucumbers. At least the tomato plants are doing great.
I'm sure I can learn a lot from everyone - I can't wait to get back to the country (been missing it since we moved here WAAAAAY back when I was 12 from rural Florida).

I was directed to this sight by a fellow subsistant survival homesteader. So far I like what I see.

Hi, another Hoosier here. We raise sheep, chickens who decide to sit like forever on their eggs, couple of Border collies, and grown daughters. Enjoy spinning, weaving and knitting plus canning when the garden does well, and we are blessed with wonderful neighbors and friends in this little countryside. Just joined, and have already learned a lot! Want to learn to make successful soap (long story)this summer - maybe some of you gals have recipes you rely on? And currently am spinning yarn for blankets to weave this winter from our wool. Looking forward to getting to know you all!

tailor... border collies are my dog of choice as well. I make soap, and would be happy to dredge up info. My greatest success has been adding a teaspoon of cornmeal at trace. Everyone raves over the texture, and it makes for great scrubbing power without removing skin. Oatmeal is also a big hit. I'd love to learn how to spin, I have a friend who both spins then weaves and I'm green with envy. Welcome!

Hi, I'm Terri, most lately from the Midwest. I think I will stay here, permanantly. I have lived here for 15 years now and it feels just like home.
I.....putter. A little of this and a little of that. A little gardening, a few hives, 6 chickens, a couple of years at the Farmers Markets.....you get the picture!
I have been married for 30 years, and we have 2 kids.

Kansas Terri and tailor - a big welcome! It's nice to see more ladies joining the forum and adding their knowledge. tailor, if you want, post a thread for soap making - I know there are several ladies here who make soap, and KellyQ sounds like she could have some good recipes. I tried making it once, learned that a stick blender makes things go much faster.

Hi Sandy From N.E. Florida. Married with a 15 yo DD. Hubby is not into preparing so DD and I get stuff in without him knowing a whole bunch. What he does see he just closes eyes!! I know oneday it will pay off!
I am not waiting for the country to go down the tubes, but unemployment, hard times, and power outages happen at regular intervals.
It is GOOD! to have emergency supplies so that you are not forced from your home. During the big ice storm a few years back we had extra covers, canned goods, firewood for the fire place, steak on the grill, and dozens of candles.
I suppose the Florida equivalent would be hurricanes and power outages.

I'm Kellie and have: One hubby, one son, two daughters, three dogs, one cat, three hamsters....and I forget what else...
Went back to school last year and am loving it! Love learning about everything it seems. When I get done with school; I'm going into the wildlife field/sciences, So I'll be able to teach among other things such as research.
Presently I'm cleaning houses to make ends meet and try to get some things stashed away for a "rainy" day. (we had one a couple years ago, tornado ripped through town and we had no power for three or four days, so preparedness, I've learned, is essential!)
I love gardening, herbs, learning, reading, writing, (NOT arithimatic! LOL!) and many other things that challenge me in good ways.
Looking forward to relocating to some mountains someday and living a more simple and self sufficent lifestyle. I've lived in many places: CA, MI, LA, CO and AR. I've also decided that the more humid states are just too humid, even if they have better gardening!
I'm looking forward to learning much from this forum, got hooked on it when someone gave me a link for one of the stories. Which was a good thing even if I spent the next two weeks solid and became sleep deprived reading many of the excellent stories I found here!

Hi, kellie. Nope, that's a pic of a male cockatiel that Frugal found for me when I first joined - I think he did it because he felt guilty - we'd had a big friendly fight going over who was gonna EAT my birdies (I had 28 at the time) and I think Frugal was secretly sending out boxes of ShakenBake!!! But it IS a spitting image of Squeekie's mate ChirpTwirp. My Squeekie died over a year ago, and now I don't have any more birdies. I'm getting old, and so were they, so I just never replaced any. But yer right, he sure is a cutie!!

I am from Texas, a new member as of September 10, 2005 and enjoying every new page I come to. I am from Texas originally, lived in 7 states all together and loved Arkansas, Kentucky, and Idaho the most. I have three grown sons, two beautiful granddaughters, three cats, praying for a small house dog that can walk and travel with me, single 23 years, and I love chess, hot tea, an open campfire, and a good book. I am so very new at outdoors stuff and frugal living, survival mode kicked in when I hit 50ish. I love history, camping, cooking outdoors, gardening, and plants. I bird watch only in the beginning stages but love the sights and sounds of the woods. If I could survive in the woods I would build a place, small and cozy, and live off of the land, cook with wood, have solar energy, and raise my own chickens, rabbits, and a pig. But I have been raised in the big city, I am afraid of guns, I am afraid I might shoot someone by accident yet I long to be self-sufficiant. Only FrugalSquirrels can save me now. Glad to be here for my first check in. Whether our prayers are short or long it is our way of keeping connected to His Love.

I was just curious to know if we have some kind of ladies weekend when we go to a shooting range or any other activity? If not, is there any interest in starting something like that? I would love to hear your thought on that
posted
There would probably be lots of interest - the hard part is getting lady squirrels from your area, on the same weekend, at the same time. You know how hard it is to get a bunch of women headed in the same direction - unless it's for a sale!! Seriously, you could try contacting some of the women near you and see if you could get something set up. Many might appreciate it.
Okay for any of you Utah girls out there, I know a great place to go shooting, and the weather is still great, so I am going to set the date for Saturday October 8th. If any of you are interested, please contact me for the time and place.

hi, im kris, ive been married for 13 years, got 3 kids, dh doesnt like it much that i spend his hard earned money on things he thinks we dont need, but he didnt gripe much when we had that ice storm in 2000, and a 2 wek old baby, no electric , no water etc for 2 weeks, we cooked on the wood heater, i had buckets to go dip in the springs, had washtubs , sat out in the snow and washed clothes, had plenty of food, made it just fine. he looks at the disasters with the hurricanes, and i ask can i get more ammo etc, yea pick up this and that while your there, we might need them. he still kinda rolls his eyes when i bring in extra stuff, but he doenst say anything. and he has fallen in love with some of my wild herbal cures. i wish i could find more women, or families that are preping like we are, it makes me nervous that everyone thinks were crazy, i dont mention storing anything to anyone anymore, things have changed so much , people we know doing things we never thaught they would do, i just quietly prepare. it would be nice to have some friends that dont think im crazy.
