Don't know if this is the right forum but I found some 7.62 by 51 ammo in my supplies and don't know what caliber it is. Can some one tell me? Thanks! Boa

Ford will fit Chevy, Chevy won't fit ford...I heard that factory .308 might be longer overall length than magazine fed government 7.62X51 Nato spec. Check that your 7.62X51 doesn't "Jump" too far to the rifling.

7.62x51mm is another way of saying "7.62mm NATO." It is not technically the same round as .308 Winchester. 7.62mm NATO has a thicker case head, slightly less case capacity, and usually a crimped primer. In fact, ammunition writers will caution readers about shooting .308 Winchester rounds out of rifles designed for the 7.62x51mm round, and especially the 7.62mm CETME round, which is considerably less powerful (although the exact same dimensional size) as the .308 Winchester. You probably needn't worry unless you have purchased an older M1916 Model Mauser and intend on trying to shoot .308 Winchester rounds out of an old, weaker, carelessly modified M1916 rifle.

Winchester took the military specs of the 7.62x51mm NATO (a shortened .30-06 cartridge ie the 7.62x63mm) and then released it commercially with the Winchester name on it.

I have fired both the .308 and the 7.62 x 51 rounds out of a semi-auto rifle as well as my bolt action precision rifle and all the ammo I have used has performed flawlessly. For all practical purposes, I have found the two types of ammo to be interchangable.
