I've finally decided to venture into pressure canning, primarily because I want to can meats. I've been doing some research, but I'm still a bit confused about what I want (so many people are using hand-me-downs that I haven't heard any solid opinions on newer ones!). Some resources say stainless steel, but the ones on the market seem to be mostly aluminum. Rubber gasket or gasketless? Some resources have said they don't feel secure without a pressure guage to rely on, but many newer models don't have those.
We don't have kids. I'm primarily canning for my husband and me, so I figured a 7-9 quart capacity would be what I'm looking for (or is there a good reason to go for a larger size?). Which brands are considered highest quality (well, within the $200 and under range)? Thanks!

Hi, maddie. Mine is an All American, metal to metal seal, and has both the gauge and the jiggler thingey. It holds 7 quart jars, and I really wouldn't want to have to lift anything much bigger than that. I think I paid $150 or close to that. Hope this helps.

I lucked up this weekend and got a Mirro 22qt model M0622 for great shape for 5 dollars. Looking forward to using it soon I saw someone down the road with a "FREE PEARS, you pick" sign in thier yard.

This is a slight departure but still pressure canner related. I've never canned before and I'm thinking of getting a small 13qt pressure canner.
Can a pressure canner also fuction as a pressure cooker for regular meals?

Squeeks we have the same canner and I love it. Holds 7 quarts and isn't too heavy to move around. I guess the bells and whistles make me feel more secure...plus my power plant engineer hubby gives a thumbs up on the 'redundant' design and gasketless seal (it's just like what they use for high pressure seals). I sometimes wish I had a smaller version that would hold maybe 4 quarts to use when I'm canning left-over soup/chili or to cook 'regular' meals in. Mr. Dove, your canner can be used as a pressure cooker for meats but the usual recommendation is not to fill it over 1/2 full or put things that foam in it. Be sure to read the directions for your canner. BG

bg: I'm glad your DH likes the seal - that was the main reason I went with that kind - one less thing to keep track of. I have trouble enough keeping track of the little jiggler thingey.
