I'm researching recipes for this year's coming camping/hiking season. What I'm wanting is something more sturdy than store-bought saltines, but not as hazardous for my teeth as hardtack. Any suggestions?

This recipe makes a nice sturdy cracker quite different than commercial crackers:
Soda Crackers
3 cups flour 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 2 Tablespoons sugar
mix well then add:
1 tablespoon oil 1 cup skim milk clabber (or sour milk or buttermilk)
Mix and beat vigorously, divide into two parts, roll paper thin [we like ours a little thicker] on a floured surface. Salt if desired by brushing aon a bit of milk and salting with a shaker. Transfer to a greased cookie sheet, prick all over with a fork, foll lightly and cut with a pizza cutter into 1 1/2 inch squares. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 minutes or until lightly brown. You can also put sesame seeds on/in them or nuts like sunflower in the dough for a more substantial cracker. We also bake the rolled dough without cutting it into squares and then we just break it into pieces. It really is a good cracker.
