I can't find any local stores that carry canning supplies. Most grocery stores carry pectin, lids and jars but I can't seem to find any actual canner or other special canning tools such as the tongs that you use for taking jars out of the bath.

where should I be looking for these items locally?

Around here, the hardware stores carry these things. Try Ace, True Value, etc. Good luck!

Great Ideas! also try Grocery stores and Dollar stores. Worst commes to worst post list of what you need and we will see who will swap you something

Also, if you look online, you'll find many places that sell the entire kit - water bath canner, Ball blue book, tongs, little magnet thingey for getting the lids out of hot water, funnel, etc.
