Seed Packet Descriptions
When we decided to offer seeds to our customers for long-term storage, it was obvious to us that we didn't have to look far for a reliable and trust-worthy company that shares our desire for good, useful and delicious food. High Mowing Seeds started in 1996 as a small company with a vision of making the highest quality 100% certified organic seed available to more people. Since then, they have grown to include hundreds of varieties of vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers and even cover crops, with almost half of the seeds grown right on their farm in Wolcott, Vermont. The rest comes from contracted farms that are all certified organic, from all over the United States, and some from overseas. All of the seeds are taken to their Wolcott farm, however, where they are cleaned, tested and packaged.
Heirlooms - Heirlooms have been grown and saved for generations by the very people who are using them. They are interesting varieties with unique characteristics such as flavor, color, and shape and can be propagated by saving seed.
Wendy Mae's Choice of Heirloom vegetables and fruit package has a large variety, from cucumbers to milling corn, from broccoli to dry bush beans. And because they‚re heirlooms, you get the unique looks and flavors that go back for generations. Enjoy the look of the Lemon cucumber (it looks just like a lemon, and tastes just like a cucumber!), the candy stripes of the Chioggia beets, and Roy's Calais flint corn, a mix of golden yellow and deep maroon ears for grinding or as ornamental pieces. Some of these varieties may not be well known to you, and others may be more familiar, like the Kentucky Wonder pole bean, Brandywine tomatoes, or the Walla Walla onions. Either way, we hope you enjoy these seeds, and continue to grow and propagate them yourself for years to come.
Open Pollinated (OP) - OP varieties simply mean that they can be propagated by saving seed. High Mowing Seeds Company encourages customers to learn how to save seeds and adapt these varieties to their own farm or garden. OP's can be both old (heirloom) or new developments at university or private breeding programs.
Wendy Mae's Choice of Open Pollinated & Heirlooms offers a wider variety of vegetables and fruit with the goal of providing a great starter package with a little of everything. Try your hand at the Red Express Cabage, the Tango Celery, and Varna Leeks, or favorites like, Roma Paste Tomato, King of the North Sweet Pepper, and the Valentine's Day Mix of red, pink, purple, and white Radishes. We have also included some older Heirloom varieties like the Painted Mountain Corn, and Snowball Y Cauliflower, along with some newer varieties like Champion Collards, and the Cosmic Purple Carrot, sure to spark one's curiosity. We hope the choices included in this package bring enjoyment to your gardening experiences. Have fun!
Note:
For optimum shelf life, we suggest that canned seeds be stored in a cool, dry place, ideally 45-50 degrees and kept from extreme temperature changes. Freezing seeds can extend shelf life for up to 10 times longer than normal. Frozen seed cans should not be opened before the can comes to room temperature as moisture may condense on the seeds.
Seeds are living organisms and therefore require some amount of oxygen to retain their ability to germinate. Due to High Mowing Organic Seeds Company's recommendation and in order to provide optimum seed storage our seeds are not packed with an oxygen absorber.
Occasional substitutions may occur without notice.
