In an emergency, they can be used to help retain body heat to prevent hypothermia. If you're wandering away from camp without your pack, make sure you stuff one in your pocket for emergencies.

I keep 2 in my wifes and my daughters GHBs.I was looking for more uses for them than ground sheets.They also have ponchos,tarps,fire,space blanket,water,1st aid,signaling and defensive capabilities in their bags also.Thanks for all the help.

JD: Also the Florescent Orange ones work great for signaling if you want to be found. The eye is attracted to movement, so tying strips about a foot or two long to branches will make them flutter in the breeze, and FO is not a natural color, so between color and movement, it will be easier to spot than a man on the ground, unless you're wearing a lot of FO.
OTOH, If you don't want to be found, they come in black too.
The main reason for the contractor's grade bags is they're huge and 3 times thicker than your standard trash bag.
