Who prefers to carry to a handgun without a permit. I live in Texas where a permit will set you back about $200, that's for the course and the permit. It's relatively easy to get and takes about three month or so from the time of the class to receipt.
However, I don't have one. I probably should get one. The thing is, I'm a disabled retired police officer, and I don't think I should have to jump through the states hoops. I can legaly carry in my vehicle, per code. But I have not been carrying on my person since I've retired. I know that they passed the retired police officer's law, but one still has to jump through several hoops. I have a badge and ID, but no physical permit. I think that is enough to get by casual inspection by a policeman on a traffic stop, but...one never knows.I might have to spend a couple hours in the tank till it's all sorted out, if you know what I mean.

I agree with NMCB3 - get the permit. I hate the idea also, but I got one anyway. Life isn't perfect - it's not fair - it's not Constitutional. So what else is new? Spending a couple hours in the tank could be laughably optimistic if it jeopardizes some cop's reputation. The penalties - especially if you get charged with a felony - just aren't worth it. The prosecutor will point out that you willingly violated the law and had so little disregard for the law that you wouldn't even bother to pay a measley $200. He could paint you as an ex-cop holding himself up as above the law, and most juries would buy it. You're imagining a friendly cop, but reality may well be some badge-heavy kid and a DA with an axe to grind or maybe he just had a fight with his wife. Either way, you're at the state's mercy, and that's not a place I'd ever want to be.
It's not fair, but you're probably used to that as a fact of life by now. Get the permit and avoid the worry factor. You're retired and shouldn't have to sweat stuff like that.
